Stretch marks are a common concern for many, appearing during periods of rapid skin stretching such as pregnancy, weight fluctuations, or growth spurts. Striae are formed by gross skin stretching and rupture of the elastic fibers present in the dermis. At this point, microscopic bleeding occurs along with tissue inflammation, which raises the reddish color of newly formed stretch marks. As the dermis is stretched, the outer layer of skin. The epidermis also stretches making it translucent enough that you can see the reddish-purple stretch mark forming. While modern treatments offer a range of solutions, Ayurveda the Ancient Indian system of natural healing provides holistic remedies to care for your skin, prevent stretch marks, and even reduce their appearance, all while promoting overall well-being. In Ayurveda, the Health of your skin is deeply connected to balance in your doshas Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, and maintaining harmony within these energies can support optimal skin health. So Let’s explore how Ayurvedic principles can help address stretch marks naturally.

What Causes Stretch Marks in Ayurveda?

According to Ayurveda, stretch marks result from imbalances in the doshas, particularly Vata and Pitta. When Vata becomes aggravated, it leads to dryness and decreased skin elasticity, making the skin more prone to tears. An excess of Pitta can cause inflammation, leading to the reddish-purple appearance of new stretch marks. Treating stretch marks with Ayurvedic remedies involves pacifying these doshas and nourishing the skin with natural ingredients.

It is characterized by Kandu (itching), Vidaha (burning sensation), and Rekha swaroopa twak sankocha (linear striae). These symptoms have a close resemblance to Striae Gravidarum in contemporary science. The onset is after the mid-pregnancy and they commonly develop in the abdomen, breasts, and thighs. These are caused by the mechanical stretching that occurs during the pregnancy period. Apart from that, hormonal and genetic factors also contribute to the formation of these striae. During pregnancy, there will be remarkable changes in the body of the woman due to the physiology of the body to adapt and provide the requirements necessary for the maintenance of the pregnancy.

Ayurveda focuses on using nature’s purest ingredients to nourish, moisturize, and repair the skin. In Ayurveda, many preparations in the form of Pana, Lepa, Abhyanga, Parisheka, etc. are mentioned for the management of Kikkisa(Striae Gravidarum) which are easy to use.
